Carpetbaggers

Who we are

Said one Yankee Lawyer in 1809, "One-half the men of business are Northern men.... The People of Savannah are nearly half natives of the Northern states.  The Natives of this city have a strong tincture of Northern manners. In fact, it seems something like living there."

See Savannah through the eyes of a "Damn Yankee" - someone who moved South and never left.  John McKenna is a certified tour guide of Savannah, and has a BA in History.  His Carpetbagger Tour will tell the story of the Yankees who lived and worked in Savannah and how they influenced the life and architecture of this beautiful city.

The Fountain in Forsyth Park, cast in New York City.

John will start his tour at William Preston's Savannah Cotton Exchange on Bay Street (Preston was from Boston).  Across the street he will note the U.S. Custom House, designed by John Norris of New York. John will also speak of a Connecticut Yankee ship captain who sailed the first steam-powered sailing vessel across the Atlantic and back, and a Pennsylvanian who was mayor of San Fransisco, Governor of the Kansas Territory, and the Union General in command of Savannah.

Hear the stories of Isaiah Davenport and Nelly Gordon and find out the roles they played in Savannah history.  See where General Sherman stayed and wrote the Infamous Telegram, giving Savannah to President Lincoln as a Christmas gift. Discover what woman became known as the "Vamp of Savannah" and  the monument to her husband.

As you walk north along Bull Street, appreciating the rich history and architecture of this beautiful city, John will also point out great shopping and dining establishments between stops along the way
